DAY 40 (Thur., 11/22)

"The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want.....you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows" - Psalm 23:1, 5

PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)

PR:  As we look at our holiday tables today, filled with an abundance of food, we thank you, Father, for all the material blessings we have received here in America:  for our freedom, our jobs, our homes, our health, and all of the good things we enjoy.   Even with the bad economic news, we know that we remain a rich people.  Thank you, Lord, for cups that overflow!

Haven’t got a lot of riches
and sometimes the going’s tough
But I’ve got loving ones around me
and that makes me rich enough.

I thank God for his blessings
and the mercies He’s bestowed
I’m drinking from my saucer
'cause my cup has overflowed.

O, Remember times when things went wrong
My faith wore somewhat thin
But all at once the dark clouds broke
and sun peeped through again.

So Lord, help me not to gripe
about the tough rows that I’ve hoed
I’m drinking from my saucer
'Cause my cup has overflowed.

If God gives me strength and courage
When the way grows steep and rough
I’ll not ask for other blessings
I’m already blessed enough.

And may I never be too busy
to help others bear their loads
Then I’ll keep drinking from my saucer
‘Cause my cup has overflowed.

SG:  Father, help us to be more consistent, and more confident, in our prayer lives.   Give us the discipline to lay our requests before you each day, and the patience to wait for your answer.

CF:  We confess that there have been times when we have led people from you, and not to you, through the carelessness of our words;  help us to be more sensitive to the impact of our actions, and more aware of those looking to us as examples.

PRAYER AGENDA:  Ask for a special measure of grace today for those who are struggling with the sin of spiritual laziness or indifference.  Especially ask God to convict the hearts of those parents who do not make the effort to bring their children to Bible School, so that these young people may have the benefit of this good ministry before they are grown     *    Pray for all our Bible school teachers as they prepare for their classes tomorrow.

7 Practical Suggestions for Using the Prayer Guides

You are about to embark on one of life's greatest adventures:  the life-changing discipline of fervent prayer!  To ensure your successful completion of the 40 Days, consider these practical suggestions:
1. Choose a specific time when you will pray each day (Daniel 6:10);   be sure it is a time you will be alert (Matthew 26:40-41). Choose a specific place to be when you pray each day;   make sure it is one where you will be undistracted (Matthew 6:6).
2. Decide now where you will keep this prayer guide so that you can find it readily.  For example, consider leaving it by your bedside or in your Bible.
3. Each day during your devotional time, read aloud the specific prayer requests for that day. This will help your mind focus on the petitions you will be offering.  To track your progress, check off the box by each date after you have completed that day's petitions.
4. If you are married or have a family, consider praying together (1 Peter 3:7.)  Family or couple prayers can not only strengthen our relationship with God but also build closeness between family members.
5. The prayer guide also contains daily "PRAYER PROMISES":   that is, scripture readings that assure us of the blessings of prayer.  Take a moment to read each day's scripture aloud before praying, to clear your mind and prepare your heart for your conversation with God (Psalm 19:14).
6. These guides are designed to expand our prayer repertoire by going beyond routine requests (Ephesians 6:18);  therefore, be sure to include ALL of the petitions in your devotions.
7. Finally, remember that our Father wants to speak to US, too! Ask God to help you be sensitive to the leading of His Spirit (Romans 8:12-27, Galatians 5:16-18) and alert to the answers He sends in your life (Acts 12:12-16)!

40 Days of Prayer Starts Sunday!

40 Days of Prayer:
12th Annual Prayer Campaign
In keeping with our goal of truly being a church "of Christ," our shepherds have called us to follow the example of Jesus by spending the next 40 days in concentrated, coordinated, congregational prayer.  If you are willing to be a part of this spiritual discipline, please use each week's prayer guide to pray for at least five minutes a day for 40 days, and to pray for the specific needs identified by the overseers of our church family.  The prayer items for each week are labeled either PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), SG (Spiritual Growth), or MN (Ministry Needs).

The theme of this year's prayer campaign is "Praying With Boldness."   Hebrews 4:16 assures us that because of the intercession of Christ our High Priest, we can   "boldly approach the throne of our gracious God, where we may receive mercy and in his grace find timely help."

Our daily meditations and prayers are designed to remind and reassure us of the promises that are given to those who sincerely seek God's blessings through Christ.
