DAY 38 (TUES., Nov. 23)
BLESSING #38 "When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'” - John 8:12
PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)
SG: We ask, Lord, for more caution and more courage as we live our lives in this wicked world. We especially ask today that you give us more discernment in our choice of entertainment.
IN: Father, we commit the future of our young people into your hands for safekeeping. We especially pray that you would be raising up, even now, a future Christian mate for them, a partner with whom they may one day establish a Christian home. We pray that they might be encouraged to purity by the assurance that you are working to honor the desires of their heart.
MN: Father, today we thank you for the work of our deacons. Ask God to bless each of them by name. (Listed below)

PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)

PR: Recall in our hearts each day what we stand for and who we are bonded in. Thank you, Father, for your Son who has made all things possible. Father, thank you for this week of prayer and we eagerly anticipate coming before you in the week to come!
PRAYER OF PRAISE
GOD, we are your children. If only the rest of the world could know what an amazing idea that is! We are the creations of the ultimate Creator! We are the loved ones of a power so far beyond our comprehension that we can’t begin to understand it ourselves.
But we have faith. We have the faith that if we live by the light of your Word, then we will know the way you want us to live. We must be able to live that way. God, help us not to be lead astray by people with more toys than us. Help us to live right. And in living right, we shall be right with you. Because we shall be your children. Amen

THE SERENITY PRAYER
The “Serenity Prayer” has been prayed by millions since it first appeared in the 1930’s:
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
It has been used in Alcoholics Anonymous since 1941. In 1953 William Spence added a section:
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
As it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
If I surrender to His Will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with Him
Forever and ever in the next.
At some meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, the line "Just for today" is added to the end of the prayer, in keeping with the statement of Jesus in Matthew 6:34 – “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

MN: Father, we ask your richest grace upon our Prime-Timers Ministry, and upon Norman and Ann Preston, who lead them. We thank you for the many ways they serve our congregation.
IN: Lord, we ask that you watch over the police and firefighters here in Union County who protect our lives and our property. Give them success in their work and keep them secure from harm.

PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)

Counting to 40...
Oops! We had the numbering of our daily prayers off for a bit. Thanks to Tinker for pointing that out! The actual content of the prayer guides were correct, just with the wrong numbers (we are on Day 24 today, instead of 32 as originally posted). This has now been corrected.
How about a bonus article as a peace offering? The article below was written by Dan Williams. Enjoy!
Why Does Jesus Have to Remind Us to Pray?
Jesus tells us in the Sermon on the Mount, “Ask, and it will be given to you; Seek, and you will find; Knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened” - Matthew 7:7-8. Again and again the Bible reminds us that God wants to grant our requests, but first it is up to us to pray. (see 1 John 5:14-15, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Ephesians 6:18, etc.) Since our Lord is so eager to bless us, why in the world would we NOT want to pray?
1. For the same reason the typical man doesn’t want to stop and ask directions when he is driving: none of us like to admit that we are not 100% in control, that we are dependent on anyone else. And yet the very heart of prayer is humility – and one of the most essential results of an active prayer life is a deeper relationship with God.
2. Because we don’t have enough faith/trust to believe it is worth our time! Prayer requires the most concentrated application of our faith, and involves the most close and intimate aspect of our relationship with God, of anything that we will ever do in this world.
3. Because prayer is hard work! When Paul writes to the Colossians he send them greetings from one of their former members, a man named Epaphras, and then adds this intriguing comment: “He is always wrestling in prayer for you” (Colossians 4:12). That phrase suggests prayer is a strenuous activity! Serious, fervent prayer is not for the mentally lazy or the spiritually sleepy.
I think that explains the three-fold admonition (“Ask...Seek... Knock”) of Jesus: he is using repetition to drive home the point that our prayer life should be ACTIVE, and we are to KEEP IT UP! Remember: God wants to bless us, but first we must A.S.K. ( A sk... S eek... K nock)! Keep praying throughout these 40 days.

DAY 23 (MON., NOV. 8)
BLESSING #31: "Pray for....all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" - 1 Timothy 2:2
PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)

We especially pray for the men and women who are serving in the military overseas. Watch over them and bring them home safely and soon.
IN: Father, bless the ladies who will work in our "Sewing for the Master" ministry tonight. We thank you for the joy they are bringing to needy children overseas.

DAY 22 (SUN., NOV. 7)
BLESSING #30: "It is more blessed to give than to receive" - Jesus (Acts 20:35)
"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing on you that you will not have room enough for it" - Malachi 3:10
PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)
PR: Father, when we inventory our blessings, we are amazed at all the blessings you have lavished on us. We thank you most of all for the opportunity to give; for the privilege of being able to support the ministries of your house; and for the assurance that when we are generous with our money, you will bless us with even more!
IN: Lord, we know there may still be Christians who have not yet learned the secret of generosity. We pray especially for our young families, that they might learn to manage their money wisely, so they can give faithfully and experience the blessings you want to pour out on them.
IN: We thank You for the sweet sisters in our Ladies'class who prepare our communion bread. As we take this bread into our bodies, help us remember the many unseen sacrifices of others that have made it possible for us to be the Body of Christ.

DAY 21 (SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6)
BLESSING #21: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.” I John 1:7-10
PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)
PR: Father, we thank You for the promise of forgiveness and unmerited favor. Make this passage real in the lives of so many who have a hard time accepting this amazing gift. Ease their minds and bless their hearts.
IN: Father, we pray for those who are on the verge on dedicating their lives to You through baptism as well as for those who need the prayers of the church but are reluctant or fearful to ask. We pray that You will give them the courage to make necessary changes.
PR: Lord, we thank You for the extra hour of sleep tonight as we set our clocks back to observe the ending of Daylight Savings Time. May we use this time wisely so that we may worship you in the morning fully rested and alert to Your presence in our lives.

PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)
SG: Father, today as we reach the half-way point of our "40 Days of Prayer" we remember the warning of Jesus to His disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane. Give us the strength and resolve to fulfill our commitment to You in this prayer campaign.
MN: Lord, we ask that You use us to built up Your church at College Avenue; that each of us will have the desire to grow, both spiritually and numerically; give us the patience to put our hope in You and to conform to Your time-line and not our own.

DAY 19 (THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4)
BLESSING #19: "All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.' Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time." - I Peter 5:5-6
PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)
SG: Father, help us to strive for a greater sense of humility as we live in a world that promotes a high value of self.
SG: Father, help us to be less self-centered, and more aware of the needs of others, and of our own need for God. We especially ask as we go through these "40 Days of Prayer" that we might grow in our faith and dependence upon You.
MN: Father, today we are thankful for the "willing unknowns" among us, for those who go about their daily walk quietly serving You in both big and small ways with no regard as to who gets the credit. Continue to bless them as they serve You and may we all learn from their example.

DAY 18 (WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3)
BLESSING #18: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'—which is the first commandment with a promise— 'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." - Ephesians 6:1-4
PR (Praise), IN (Intercession), CF (Confession), SG (Spiritual Growth), MN (Ministry Needs)
PR: Father, today we thank You for kids. We know that they are truly a gift from You. Bless our moms and dads as they daily equip their children for adulthood in a world that does not always support Christian values.
IN: Lord, we pray today for the faithfulness of husbands and wives. We ask that You would preserve the marriages of our church family from the attacks of Satan; that the hearts of mates might be turned to each other, and away from distractions. Help those who are married remember their promises to each other and to You when they are tempted.
MN: Father, we thank You for a great lineup of Bible classes this Fall quarter. Be with Lewis & Carol Whatley and others who are involved in recruiting teachers for the upcoming Winter quarter.
